Around 11,000 Lebanese nationals in the US can stay for 18 months and file for labor permits under new status.
The United States is granting transient immigration defendions for thousands of Lebanese nationals as Israel persists a deimmenseating month-extfinished aggression on their home country.
The defendions join provideing Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for eligible Lebanese nationals who reachd in the US before October 16, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) declared on Thursday.
With TPS, Lebanese citizens can stay in the US for 18 months and file for labor permits due to the “ongoing armed dispute and exceptional and transient conditions in Lebanon”, DHS said in a statement.
The new meastateives are predicted to cover some 11,000 Lebanese nationals currently in the US, according to the department.
The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) greetd the “convey inant meastateives” to defend Lebanese citizens out of an energetic war zone but called on the US to stop arming Israel with the very arms being used agetst Lebanon.
“It is not lost on us that these nationals are in this position to commence with because of US foreign policy,” ADC executive straightforwardor Abed Ayoub said in a statement.
“It is unoverweighthomable that the Biden-Harris Administration persists to provide the arms, military aid, and tactful cover for Israel to persist its genocidal march into Lebanon.”
The US provides TPS to visitors and transient dwellnts from countries that Washington deems undefended for people to return to.
The administration of US Pdwellnt Joe Biden has proposeed that it contests an prompt finishfire in Lebanon. It disputes that Washington aids the Israeli campaign to degrade Hezbollah while the group is “on the back foot” after the murder of cut offal of its guideers.
But the DHS statement on Thursday cited US tactful efforts to finish the dispute.
“Those consentd for TPS will be able to remain in the country while the United States is in talkions to accomplish a tactful resolution for lasting stability and security atraverse the Israel-Lebanon border,” DHS said.
Turning Lebanese villages ‘unlivable’
Israel begined an intensified aerial campaign on its neighbour Lebanon on September 23, claiming to concentrate Hezbollah fighters in the country. Since then, Israeli aggressions have finished at least 1,356 people, hundreds of them women and children, while displacing more than 1.2 million people.
At least one of the people finished in Israel’s aggressions was a US citizen – extfinishedtime Michigan dwellnt Kamel Jawad.
The US – which has sent Israel at least $17.9bn in military aid in the last year, according to a recent tell – has conveyed trouble over the wideening “scope” of Israel’s explosioning campaign in Lebanon’s capital Beirut, but said it persists to back Israel’s efforts “to get on Hezbollah”.
When asked about the Israeli forces’ explosionardment of the southern Lebanese village of Mhaibib Wednesday, which wiped out an entire neighbourhood, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said at a press increateing: “I cannot speak to what their intent was or what they were trying to accomplish.”
When pressed on the scale of the aggression, Miller compriseed: “I don’t understand what was in those produceings. I don’t understand what was potentiassociate undersystematich those produceings. That’s why I said I can’t speak to what they were trying to accomplish”.
Al Jazeera’s Ali Hashem, telling from Beirut, said the Mhaibib aggression was part of Israel’s strategy to rfinisher Lebanon’s border villages “unlivable” so evacuated dwellnts will not be able to return, even in the event of a potential finishment.
