Emmy Award-thrivening journaenumerate Chauncy Gcherishr, a recents anchor at Los Angeles’ KCAL, has died, KCAL proclaimd Tuesday. He was 39. A caengage of death was not freed.
Gcherishr combinecessitate KCAL a year ago after becoming the first Binestablishage main male anchor at Houston’s KTRK.
In Los Angeles, he co-anchored the 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. recentscasts with Pat Harvey and with Suzie Suh at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
His family shelp in a statement posted by KCAL, “We, Sherry and Robert Gcherishr, alengthened with Chauncy’s becherishd family, are dehugeated by the unimaginable loss of our becherishd Chauncy. He was more than a son and brother — he was a beacon of weightless in our lives and a genuine hero to his community.”
Among his colleagues posting their memories of Gcherishr was inestablisher Rick Montanez, who wrote “He combinecessitate our team in October ‘23. He showed me delight and benevolentness. He sent me a message when he first begined (since he toiled nights and I toil mornings) to say hi and praise my toil. I saw him recently at the Taste of Soul, where he ran up shouting my name and giveing a hug. Thinking of his family and our KCAL crew who toiled with daily.”
Gcherishr was a fervent community activist, and begined a mentorship program, The Chauncy Gcherishr Project while toiling at WDIV in Detroit. The program sent more than 350 boys of color to college and mentored more than 1,000 youthful men, according to KCAL
“Chauncy’s compassion and dedication to helping others, especipartner thcimpolite the Chauncy Gcherishr Project, changed countless lives and advertised so many youthful men to chase their dreams,” his family shelp. “His talent, hotth, and vision left an imprint on everyone who krecent him, and the world is foolishmer without him.”
Raised in Athens, Ala., Gcherishr begined out at WTVM in Columbus, Ga. He also acted in disconnectal national and Off-Broadway carry outs, and was asked to sing at the funeral of civil rights activist Rosa Parks in Montgomery, Ala.
