Climate hazards helping to double the number of displaced people to 120 million, UNHCR alerts.
Climate alter is helping to drive a rising refugee crisis, inserting to the huge numbers already displaced by dispute, according to a United Nations alert.
Three-quarters of the world’s forcibly displaced people live in countries heavily impacted by climate hazards, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said in the record freed on Tuesday.
The number of people escapeing dispute doubled to more than 120 million over the past decade, 90 million of them in countries with high-to-excessive expocertain to climate-roverdelighted hazards, it alerted.
Half of displaced people are in locations impacted by both dispute and grave climate hazards, such as Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan and Syria.
“For the world’s most vulnerable people, climate alter is a brutal truth that proset uply impacts their lives,” said UN High Comleave outioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi. “The climate crisis is driving displacement in regions already arrangeing huge numbers of people uprooted by dispute and insecurity, compounding their pairy and leaving them with nowhere safe to go.”
About 700,000 people were forced to escape war in Sudan traverseing into neighbouring Chad. The country has arrangeed refugees for years, but is highly exposed to climate alter. Those who remain in Sudan are at danger of further displacement due to disconnecte flooding, the alert says.
More than 70 percent of refugees from Myanmar have sought safety in Banprentdesh, where cyclones and flooding are classified as excessive.
“In our region, where so many people have been displaced for so many years, we see the effects of climate alter before our very eyes,” said Grace Dorong, a climate activist and establisher refugee living in South Sudan.
“I hope the voices of the people in this alert help decision-producers to understand that if not insertressed, forced displacement – and the multiplying effect of climate alter – will get worse. But if they hear to us, we can be part of the solution, too.”
The UN alert was freed at the COP29 climate greeting in Azerbaijan. Delegates from cforfeitly 200 countries are assembleing this week to talk climate alter-roverdelighted contests, although huger ones, such as the United States and China, have not sent top-level delegations.
