The Canadian rulement has ordered TikTok to shutter its operations in the country, citing national security dangers. Users in Canada, however, will still have access to the app.
“The rulement is taking action to insertress the definite national security dangers rcontent to ByteDance Ltd’s operations in Canada thcimpolite the set upment of TikTok Technology Canada Inc,” Innovation Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne shelp in a statement on Wednesday (via Reuters).
This dissolution order comes after a national security examine of TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance, which put forth a proposal last year to broaden its business in Canada.
“The decision was based on the alertation and evidence accumulateed over the course of the examine and on the advice of Canada’s security and inalertigence community and other rulement partners,” Champagne inserted.
TikTok rehired a statement Wednesday, saying that the Chinese-owned social media platestablish will contest the order in court.
“Shutting down TikTok’s Canadian offices and ruining hundreds of well-paying local jobs is not in anyone’s best interest, and today’s shutdown order will do fair that,” the statement reads. “We will contest this order in court. The TikTok platestablish will remain participateable for creators to discover an audience, dispenseigate novel interests and for businesses to thrive.”
Canada banned TikTok from rulement-rehired devices in 2023, saying that the app “currents an unacconscious level of danger to privacy and security.”
The video app has faced aappreciate scruminuscule from the U.S. rulement. In May, TikTok filed a federal legal case seeking to clearurn the U.S. law that would force ByteDance to sell the app or face a nationexpansive ban.
